ZFS protects your data
At the heart of TrueNAS is the self-healing OpenZFS file system. It has built-in RAID, snapshots and replication, and it detects and repairs silent data corruption automatically. That keeps your data intact from the first write to the last restore.
TrueNAS Community Edition and Enterprise
TrueNAS comes in two editions. TrueNAS Community Edition is free and runs on your own hardware or in a virtual machine. TrueNAS Enterprise powers the TrueNAS appliances and adds high availability and support options. If you still run TrueNAS CORE, formerly FreeNAS, note that it is no longer actively developed. FreeNAS was renamed TrueNAS CORE. CORE is no longer actively developed. The current software is TrueNAS Community Edition, formerly known as SCALE.
