Server decommissioning across five countries, handled by one team
We have completed the decommissioning of more than 5,000 servers for one of our customers. The hardware stood in data centers in Singapore, Japan, the Netherlands, France and the USA. Five countries, different sites, different time zones, and one nesevo team responsible for all of it.
A project like this usually falls apart at the handovers. One provider de-installs, another one transports, a third one erases the data, and nobody has the full picture. We kept the whole process in our own hands instead. Our staff did the work on site, from de-installation and logistics to the final outcome of every device. No subcontractors were involved at any point. The customer had one point of contact, a clear chain of custody and little disruption to daily operations.
Every server went through the same three stages:
- Certified data erasure. No customer data stays on hardware that leaves the data center.
- Resale or responsible recycling. Devices with remaining value went back into the market. The rest was recycled properly.
- Tracking from rack to final outcome. The customer kept full oversight of every single asset, wherever it was in the process.
The same standard applied in every country. That matters most on a project this size, because the customer should not have to check each site separately to know that the job was done properly.
Decommissioning is rarely the goal in itself. It creates room for what comes next, whether that is new hardware, a consolidated setup or a relocated data center. We took the old equipment off the customer’s plate, so their team could concentrate on the next upgrade.
